From Echoing Footsteps:
Bertha Preus came to Montana about 1917 and homesteaded in the Kingsley community. She taught school in this area. Soon after, Mr. Ambuel came from Chicago to seek his fortune. He had lost his wife, so left his small children, Madeline, Margaret and Francis under the care of an aunt. He met and married Bertha Preus and together they made a home for his family and later their own 2 children. They had a midwife for delivery but then Mr. Ambuel took care of the babies, and was the next best nurse.
The family worked hard, they farmed and grew a nice orchard of apples. When Mr. Ambuel passed away, Mrs. Ambuel's brother, William, helped out until they left the place.
J. Philip Ambuel and Louise Ambuel published a thorough history of the Ambuel family homesteading in Kingsley in 1996: Letters via Chinook: Life in Montana in the '20s and '30s.
